ACTH is a hormone produced in the anterior, or front, pituitary gland in the brain. The function of ACTH is to regulate levels of the steroid hormone cortisol, which is released from the adrenal gland.

An ACTH test measures the levels of ACTH in the blood and helps your doctor detect diseases that are associated with too much or too little cortisol in the body. Possible causes of these diseases include: a pituitary or adrenal malfunction a pituitary tumor an adrenal tumor a lung tumor

Cortisol is a hormone and affects many different functions in the body. Cortisol can help control blood sugar levels, regulate metabolism, help reduce inflammation, and assist with memory formulation. It has a controlling effect on salt and water balance and helps control blood pressure.

DHEAS This test measures Dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEA-S) in the blood. DHEA-S is a male sex hormone produced primarily by the adrenal glands. It is also produced in smaller amounts in the ovaries or testicles. Elevated DHEA can be caused by adrenal tumors or, in some cases, ovarian tumors. Excess DHEA can cause early puberty in young boys or the absence of menstrual periods or the development of male characteristics such as a deeper voice or excess facial or body hair in women

The DHEA-S test is typically ordered to evaluate adrenal function or when a person shows symptoms of excess androgen or male sex hormone production. For women, this test may be ordered to determine a cause for infertility or when they are not experiencing a menstrual period.

For men, this test is often ordered with testosterone or other hormone tests. For women, DHEA is often tested along with estrogen and other hormone tests.
