What is influenza?

Influenza, commonly known as the flu, is caused by a virus. It mainly spreads from person to person through the air by coughing, sneezing, talking, and touching a person's hands, surface, or object.

The flu, a respiratory illness, is not to be taken lightly. It can affect your nose, throat, and even your lungs. Unlike a common cold, flu symptoms like fever, sore throat, and muscle aches come on suddenly and can last for about a week. The severity of the flu can range from mild to severe, and in some cases, it can lead to complications such as pneumonia and bronchitis, which may require hospitalisation and can even be fatal. This is why it's crucial to differentiate between a 'cold' and the flu. With the flu, you're likely to feel very unwell.

It's important to understand that the flu can exacerbate underlying medical conditions. This is why it's recommended to get vaccinated every year. The flu viruses that circulate in the community are constantly changing, and the immunity provided by the vaccine doesn't last for a long time. Therefore, it's especially crucial for those at risk to get vaccinated annually to stay protected.
